M.Arch. Thesis (2023) Section e: the Post-Theoretical Narrative.
An Ironic Letter for the Architecture of the Spectacle.
Make noise, everybody is talking: how can they hear you? Talk louder, display more, be MORE, be spectacular. Someone said you are being obnoxious: what a fool! Do not listen, neglect them, block them, cancel them: remember, you are what society desires. Seduce your society, make them consume you, and make sure that you will hear the ‘wow’s they say. If you are not able to do so, you deserve to be unfollowed and forgotten.
Display or perish. Life is about give and take. Do not let them forget about you. Every day you should do something further, change your facade, expand your space, create new events, transform yourself, and open up your fancy-flickering lights when the sun goes down, just like you are a screen. (Speaking of screens, here’s some advice for you; display some advertisements on your surface!). Rent yourself, find some sponsors, and be an influencer. It is a show, and what is evilabout it? All of us are showing off! Everybody will enjoy it at the end of the day. Create a unique image of yourself: you are not like everybody else, so do not let them think that you are a replica, a repetition, an ordinary entity. If you cannot draw attention, then you are a loser. Are you craving for attention? Such a loser. Exhibit your vitrine, do not put curtains on, and let the people see what is inside. What is really there? Emptiness? A huge nothingness? Pipes, cables, mechanical parts? No, don’t be so honest with society. It’s boring; hide the unnecessary details. Hide who you really are, but only if it isn’t interesting. What you should be doing instead is selling the possibility of happiness, beauty, and beyond. Do not be boring; put some colors on your walls. Boring is bad, and bad is boring; be funny, be exciting, be amusing, be cute, be adorable, but never pure. There is a delicate line here: can you see it? It is all about illusion. You have to be cool, you should never be cooled down. Remember your audience: we are in the society of the spectacle, and everything can be a part of the stage. Do not stop, and keep your audience entertained enough.
Keep showing off until the show itself collapses.
Oh! Wait a minute, what is that face?
Did you forget that your existence is limited? They will tear you down someday.
I am so sorry, you were such a nice guy…
…and I will not be remembering you the day after you disappear.
“The spectacle is not a collection of images; rather it is a social relationship between people that is mediated by images.” (Guy Debord, The Society of the Spectacle, 1994).
